The Problem with Plasterboard Outdoors
Standard plasterboard ceilings just aren’t designed for the tough Australian climate, with its summer humidity and winter dampness.
They absorb moisture, which can lead to sagging, water stains and unsightly mould growth. They also offer very little in terms of design, leaving your outdoor room feeling unfinished.
Pressed tin panels, on the other hand, are made from a specialty grade of aluminium, making them a perfect, long-lasting option for your alfresco area, front porch, or back verandah.

Step 1: Prepare Your Surface
You’ll need a solid, flat substrate like 9mm marine or structural grade plywood. Make sure it’s securely fixed to the joists and that all screw heads are flush to create a perfectly flat base.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout
Find the exact center of your ceiling and use a chalk line to mark your horizontal and vertical axes. This gives you a perfect starting point and helps keep your pattern straight.
Step 3: Cut Your Panels
For straight cuts, a guillotine is best, but for trickier shapes around light fittings, a pair of tin snips will work well. Always wear protective gloves, as the cut edges can be sharp.
Step 4: Fix Them in Place
Apply a generous bead of polyurethane-based adhesive (like Liquid Nails) to the back of the panel. Press it firmly onto your marked lines and secure the overlaps with small, 1.2mm flathead nails.
Step 5: Finish the Look
Use our aluminium finishing strips to cover the joins and outer edges. For a professional result on the corners, mitre the ends of the strips to a 45-degree angle before fixing them in place.
Final Touches
For the smoothest finish, always paint your panels after they’ve been installed. This allows you to cover all the nail heads and joins, creating a perfect, uniform look.
